"There are two primary reasons a diet will fail for you: Improper Habits and Misunderstood Feelings" |
Four Simple Changes You Can Make Today, To Lose Weight!
1. Eat All Your Meals In The Same Place
Where do you eat? The key is to eat in the same place every day for a month. This prevents you from consistently snacking or focusing on other things other than eating. If you're at home try only eating while sitting at the table. If you're at work try only eating in the break room. Eat breakfast at the kitchen table as well, eliminate the breakfast on the go. When we eat while engaging in other activities we start to associate that activity with eating. For example when we watch tv in the evening we feel compelled to grab a bag of chips or have a bowl of ice cream, whether we are hungry or not. We condition ourselves and eat unnecessarily. The same is true if we snack at our desk at work, we continue to snack without any mental effort to discover if we are actually hungry. When you are truly hungry, go to your designated spot and have a healthy meal or snack. 2. Eliminate One Unhealthy Food From Your Diet
Many people find this one change can help them shed pounds in no time. What is your vice? Is it that bowl of ice cream before bed every night, the 64 ounces of soda you consume daily, maybe it's your love affair with chocolate. Are you eating too much pasta or consuming too many carbohydrates such as doughnuts and pastries. Start keeping track of what you are consuming daily and if something is making you feel guilty, maybe you should try to eliminate it from your diet for a predetermined period of time. The USDA recently found that the average American adult is consuming 320 calories of added sugar each day. That's close to 20 teaspoons of added sugar a day! Lose the sugar and chances are you will lose the weight. 3. Take Time To Savor Your Food, Eat Slower
When you are trying to lose weight, portion size is of the utmost importance. Smaller portions equal fewer calories which leads to weight loss. How do we eat smaller portions and still feel satisfied? Eat slower. By this simple act we give our bodies time to process the food and send a signal to the brain when we are full. If we eat to fast we don't know when we are full often resulting in eating to much. Most of us eat more food than necessary, hence adding more calories, leading to weight gain. You do not have to clean your plate, only eat until you're full. 4. Drink More Water
Water is an amazing zero calorie drink that helps you loose weight. Every system in your body requires water to function properly, it carries nutrients to your cells and flushes toxins out of your vital organs. To put the odds in your favor we want our bodies, which are comprised of 60 percent water, to be operating at peak performance. Drinking water in the morning will help you wake up faster and give you more energy for your day. Instead of reaching for a chocolate bar to ward off afternoon fatigue, try drinking 16 ounces of water. How much water should you drink a day? Take your total weight and divide it in half, this number is how many ounces you should be drinking a day. For example, if you way 200 pounds you should be drinking 100 ounces a day. Another tip is to drink 16 ounces before meal times, but while eating, instead of washing every bite down with a drink, allow yourself to chew the food and let your saliva help in the digestion. |
Habits: Why is it hard to change a bad habit?
Our lives are filled with habits, from the way we get out of bed, brush our teeth and put on our shoes. Habits take the thought process out of ordinary activities we participate in daily. This allows us to free up brain power to take on new activities. As these habits are reinforced on a regular basis they become rutted in our brain and our subconscious mind adapts to accept these habits as the correct flow of our day. For instance, you can drive home from work with very little thought because your subconscious takes over, freeing your mind to drift or to replay your day or to think about the kids soccer game. Losing weight is not any different. Let's say you eat a bowl of ice cream or snack on chips every night in front of the television and you've been doing this for awhile. You tell yourself when you start your new diet, "I am not going to eat ice cream before I go to bed anymore". You do fine for a couple of days but before you know it you find yourself in front of the television with a scoop of ice cream, "just this once". A couple more days go by without ice cream and then you find yourself slipping again and again and again until your back to eating ice cream every night before bed. Let's look at another example of a habit being rutted into the subconscious. You've decided only healthy eating for you and your family from now on. The problem is that for the past several years it was normal for you to stop and pick up fast food three to four times a week on your way home from work. The first few days you do great, you hurry home and prepare an amazing healthy dinner for your family. You make it to Thursday but as you're passing your favorite fast food restaurant you have this sudden urge to go through the drive-thru. You're so tired from a long day of work and you can almost taste the fries, but you keep driving and win this battle. The next day the urge is a little stronger and the fries start to melt in your mouth and before you know it you're walking in the front door with a couple of greasy bags, one of the packages of fries already depleted. Before you know it the grandiose idea of healthy dinners every night is a distant memory.

Feelings: What are your feelings telling you?
Feelings, also called emotions play a pivotal role in helping us lose weight. The reason for this is that we often eat too much or indulge ourselves with sweets such as a piece of raspberry cheesecake when we feel bad. Have you ever heard the term "comfort food"? There are several feelings that can drive us to eating too many calories, here are some of the more common emotions: sadness, loneliness, inadequacy, guilt, anger, boredom and anxiety. When we start to feel one of these misunderstood feelings coming on we often times want to distract form the feeling which as humans we have found that eating too much can be a solution. Unfortunately this does not resolve the feeling because often times it's all too quick to return. Eating to take our mind off one of these feelings can turn into a very bad habit causing you to gain a lot of weight. Let's say you are single and lonely. You go home to an empty condo every night just to be faced with the feeling that you're alone. You hate feeling alone and then one evening you find a piece of raspberry cheesecake left over from an awful date you were on the night before. Thinking about the date makes you feel even worse. The cheesecake is there so you eat it and before you know it you feel much better. As your heading home from work you start to feel lonely again and you remember the cheesecake from the night before and how it made you feel better. You stop at the grocery store and pick up another cheesecake. You get home and have a piece. The cheesecake last for about a week but you have started to create a habit. You tell yourself after this one is gone you're not buying any more. You go a couple of days without cheesecake but then you have a rough day at work and you find yourself eating more cheesecake. This is the feel bad distract cycle.
